Remembering Eminent Hindustani Classical Vocalist of Kirana Gharana Pandit Sangameshwar Gurav on his 89th Birth Anniversary (7 December 1931) ••

Pandit Sangameshwar Gurav (7 December 1931 - 7 May 2014) was an Eminent Hindustani Classical Vocalist of the Kirana Gharana. He was awarded the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award by the Government of India in 2001. He is father of Eminent Hindustani Classical Vocalist Pt. Kaivalyakumar Gurav.

• Career :
Gurav was born in Jamkhandi where his father, Ganpatrao Gurav, was a court musician. Ganpatrao was a direct descendent of Abdul Karim Khan. He was raised by father in Dharwad.
Sangameshwar Gurav got Music lessons from his father who learned from Pandit Bhaskarbuwa Bakhale for 6 years and Kirana Gharana founder Ustad Abdul Karim Khan Saheb for 8 Years.
Sangameshwar Gurav was a teacher in the music department of Karnatak University where he worked alongside Pandit Mallikarjun Mansur, Pandit Basavraj Rajguru, and Dr. Gangubai Hangal.

• Awards :
Gurav received the Central Sangeet Natak Akademi award for Hindustani vocal music in 2001.

• Death and descendants :
Gurav died on 7 May 2014. He is survived by wife, two sons, and two daughters. His son Kaivalya Kumar Gurav continues the musical lineage. His other son Nandikeshwar is a tabla artist employed at Karnatak University.
