Mridangam is a percussion instrument from India of ancient origin. It is the primary rhythmic accompaniment in a Carnatic music ensemble. The mridangam is also played in Carnatic concerts in countries outside of India, including Sri Lanka, Singapore, Malaysia, Australia, United Kingdom, Canada, and the United States. During a percussion ensemble, the mridangam is often accompanied by the ghatam, kanjira, and the morsing. The mridangam is nicknamed as the "King of Percussion". It is a barrel-shaped double-headed drum with one head larger than the other, used in southern Indian music. Tripunithura Viswanathan Gopalakrishnan is a Carnatic and Hindustani musician from Chennai. Gopalakrishnan hails from a family of musicians spanning over two centuries. His father was a court musician for the Cochin Royal Family. Gopalakrishnan started playing the mridangam at the age of four and had his arangetram at the Cochin palace at the age of six. He is one of the senior most a disciples of Chembai Vaidyanatha Bhagavathar.
