Pandit Ravishankar, the grandfather of Indian classical music, was born on April 7, 1920 in Varanasi. In 1992, he was awarded India's highest honor, the Bharat Ratna. Pandit Ravishankar had entered the art world through dance.
Pandit Ravi Shankar wanted to touch the heights of dance like his elder brother Uday Shankar. He also toured Europe and India with his brother's dance troupe in his youth. At the age of eighteen, Panditji quit dancing and started learning sitar.

Pt. Ravishankar reached Maihar to take initiation of sitar from Ustad Alauddin Khan and devoted himself in his service. He raised the name of Guru all over the world with his talent. Sitar and Pt. Ravi Shankar became synonymous with each other.
He brought Indian classical music to the corners of the world. He also played the sitar with the world famous band Beatles. Pandit Ravishankar reached the pinnacle of music, but remained divided as a family. Pandit Ravishankar had two marriages.

His first marriage was to Annapurna, the daughter of Guru Alauddin Khan. They later divorced. His second marriage was to Sukanya, with whom he has one child. He also had an affair with Sue Jones, an American woman, with whom he has a daughter, Nora Jones.
He did not marry Sue. Panditji's two daughters Anushka Shankar and Nora Jones are carrying on Panditji's musical heritage. Pandit Ravishankar received many awards from home and abroad, including Magsaysay, three Grammy Awards. He was also a member of Rajya Sabha from 1986 to 1992.
