•• Remembering Eminent Hindustani Classical Vocalist Pandit Ravi Kichlu of Agra Gharana on his 88th Birth Anniversary (24 December 1932 - 1993)
Born in Almora in 1932, and educated at the benaras Hindu university, Pandit Ravi Kichlu was a doyen of the Agra Gharana, having trained under Ustad Moinuddin Dagar, Ustad Aminuddin dagar and Ustad Latafat Hussain Khan.
His memmerising performances, with a distinct emphasis on Dagar Bani and Alapchari (rendered in the nom-tom style), thrilled audiences in India and abroad.
A classical vocalist of international repute, Pt. Ravi Kichlu was gifted with a clear, melodious and versatile voice which also blended effortlessly with semi-classical and light music like thumri, dadra, kajri, geeet, bhajan and ghazal. His sons Neeraj, Vibhas and Vivek often accompanied him during his recitals.
A many-faceted personality, Pt. Ravi Kichlu was also a sportsman of rare calibre – having captained various teams for the Benaras Hindu University and having represented his stae in Cricket (Ranji Trophy) and Rigby. He was also awarded the University Blue for being the most outstanding sportsman. In the commercial worls, he was the director of a leading jute company in Kolkata, the city before he lived and found recognition as a musician pas excellence.
Many awards and accolades came his way, but Pt. Ravi Kichlu treated them lightly – amused at the attention and uncarring of its temporary headlines and power. To him what was important were the beautiful, subtle moments of life, like crystal clear notes of his favourite Ragas - full of magic, flooded with ligth and warmth, like the man himself.
On his Birth Anniversary, Hindustani Classical Music And Everything pays rich tributes to the legend for his services to the Hindustani Classical Music. 💐🙏
