Jagjit Singh
Jagjit ji was born on 8 February 1941 in Ganganagar, Rajasthan. Father Sardar Amar Singh Dhamani was an employee of the Government of India. Jagjit ji's family is originally from Dalla village in Ropar district of Punjab. Mother Bachchan Kaur was from Uttalan village in Samrala, Punjab. Jagjeet's childhood name was Jeet. Due to crores of listeners, Singh sahib became Jagjit who won the Jag in a few decades.
education
Early education took place at the Khalsa School in Ganganagar and later came to Jalandhar to study. Bachelor's degree from DAV College and after this he also did post graduation in history from Kurukshetra University.
Music debut
Music inherited from his father in childhood. In Ganganagar itself, he started learning classical music for two years in the association of Pandit Chhagan Lal Sharma. Later, he learned the nuances of Khyal, Thumri and Dhrupad from Ustad Jamal Khan Sahab of the Sania Gharana. The father wanted his son to go to the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), but Jagjit was keen to become a singer. During his studies at Kurukshetra University, Vice-Chancellor Professor Surajbhan encouraged Jagjit Singh Ji to see his interest in music. At his behest, he moved to Mumbai in 1965.
Film journey
Who can forget 'Premgeet' directed by Raman Kumar in 1971 and 'Earth' directed by Mahesh Bhatt in 1942. Jagjit ji gave music in 'Earth'. Every song in the film was spoken by the people. After this, all attempts to give hit music in films failed miserably. A few years ago, the film Leela, starring Dimple Kapadia and Vinod Khanna, had average music. Khudai in 1979, Billu Badshah in 1979, Laws of Law in 1979, Rahi in 1979, Jwala in 1949, Clove Da Lashkara in 1979, Ravana in 1979 and Sitam songs in 1972 and neither did the films. All these films were considered below average in those days. It is obvious that Jagjit Singh played a lot of papad as a composer, but he failed to make good film songs. In contrast, playback singer Jagjit ji has always been busy listening to the listeners. His thunderous voice continued descending into the depths of the heart as if the hearts of both the listener and the listener were united. Here are some hit movie songs-
'Lets touch my lips with the lyrics of love song' Amar Kar Do '' O Maa Tujhe Salaam 'of' Khalnayak '' Letter 'No Message' from 'Enemy' 'Joggers Park' 'Big delicate is this destination' -With 'Yeh Tera Ghar, Yeh Mera Ghar' and 'Pyaar Mujhe Jo Jo Dosti', 'What is the news to the senses of Surfarosh', What is the absurdity of 'Traffic signal' 'Even if you do not touch the relationship (Film version) 'Tum Bin''s' Koi Faryad Tere Dil Mein Bhi Ho' like 'Veer Zara' 'Tum Paas Aa Hate Ho' (with Lata ji) 'Taraqeeb' 'My Eyes has chosen to see you in the world' '
Common man's ghazal
When Jagjit Singh started singing ghazals like film songs, the common man started showing interest in ghazals but eyebrows of ghazals were crooked. Especially in the world of Ghazal, which belonged to the likes of Mayar Begum Akhtar, Kundanlal Sehgal, Talat Mehmood, Mehdi Hasan. Apart from this, Jagjit Singh's style did not appeal to the purists. Actually this was the period when the common man started listening to ghazals by listening to singers like Jagjit Singh, Pankaj Udhas. On the other hand, the use of new singers was piercing the enthusiasts of traditional singing away from classicalism. It is alleged that Jagjit Singh tampered with Ghazal's purity and mood. But Jagjit Singh has always said in his cleanliness that he has made some changes in the presentation but has done very little to tamper with the words. On most occasions, removing some heavy ghazal lions and covering it for six to seven minutes and began the practice of double bass, guitars, pianos in music. It should also be noted that the use of modern and western instruments is violin, Traditional instruments like tabla were not left behind.
